Plot [ edit] Jamie Rellis is an executive recruiter for a leading job agency in New York City, and Dylan Harper works as an art director for a small internet company in Los Angeles. Jamie has the task of trying to recruit Dylan to interview for a job with GQ and begin working in New York City. Dylan comes to New York and after interviewing for the position learns from Jamie that he has been given an offer to work for GQ. Initially skeptical about the job and moving to New York, Dylan eventually agrees to the job after a fun night exploring the city with Jamie. The following day, Jamie presents Dylan with the contract to sign so she can land her commission for recruiting him. Not knowing anyone else in the city, he quickly develops a strong platonic friendship with Jamie. One night, they get on the topic of sex and relationships. They come to the conclusion that sex should not come with so many emotional attachments. As they both feel the need for a physical connection, they agree to have sex without emotion or commitment. After several trysts together, Jamie comes to the realization that this is not really what she wants and she would like to start dating again. She tells Dylan that they need to stop. Jamie meets Parker, an oncologist, and they begin dating. After five dates, they consummate their relationship, only to break up the next morning. However, the next day, Jamie overhears a conversation between Annie and Dylan, where Annie suspects Dylan and Jamie like each other, though he insists otherwise and says Jamie is too "fucked up" for him to date. Hurt, she flies back to New York. A few days later, Dylan returns to New York, trying to reconcile his friendship with Jamie and find out why she has been ignoring him. He finally finds Jamie on the top of a building, and she informs him she overheard everything he said and has no interest in maintaining any kind of a friendship with him. Soon after this, Jamie discovers that Dylan may be leaving the GQ position for another job before the year elapses on his contract, which would affect her commission. She confronts Dylan about this, which leads to another argument. Both begin to do some soul searching trying to come to terms with their feelings about their relationship. Jamie spends time with her mother, Lorna, while Dylan discusses it with Annie over the phone. His sister informs him that their father will be flying to Newark and he needs to be picked up at the airport. While at the airport, his father, in a moment of Alzheimer's-induced confusion, incorrectly recognizes a passer-by as a woman from his past. Dylan asks him about the woman. After regaining his lucidity, his father says that she was a woman he met in the Navy and "the love of my life". He also states that he regrets decisions he made in his youth to let her go. Dylan's father tells him not to do the same thing, and to reconcile with Jamie if there is any chance of saving the relationship. Dylan realizes how he really feels about Jamie after talking with his father and decides to go after her; he calls Jamie's mother to set up an excuse to get Jamie to go to Grand Central Station thinking she will be picking up her mother. He arranges to have a flash mob dance to " Closing Time " set up to surprise Jamie at the station. When the moment comes, he catches up with Jamie and tells her how he really feels. Surprised and happy by this turn of events, Jamie tells him to kiss her. After sharing a passionate kiss, Dylan suggests it is time they go on their first real date. They go across the street to the Pershing Square café and although they attempt to keep the date casual and relaxed, the film ends with them in a sensual embrace and passionate kiss. [7] He was soon followed by Mila Kunis when she landed the female lead opposite him. Approximately two months later, Variety magazine announced that an ensemble cast consisting of Emma Stone, Patricia Clarkson, Richard Jenkins, Woody Harrelson, Andy Samberg and Jenna Elfman were set to join them in the film. [8] Three days after principal filming began, Bryan Greenberg completed the cast. [9] The film features cameo appearances from Shaun White, Jason Segel, and Rashida Jones. [10] Production locations were set up as early as July 13, and principal filmography commenced on July 20, 2010 in the Midtown Manhattan section of New York City. [11] Filming continued in Central Park and other sections of New York City from July to early August before the production relocated to Los Angeles, California. [11] [12] Paramount Pictures dropped its original protest against the film after their director, Ivan Reitman, re-titled his film, No Strings Attached. Screen Gems then moved forward with the title Friends with Benefits. At the same time, NBC was developing a sitcom with the same title, but the movie production company stated that due to its production schedule, they didn't expect an issue to arise. [13] Screen Gems chose to accelerate production fearing that they would lose their title to the competing Paramount project. Director Will Gluck spoke about the frustration of comparing the two films, stating: "I wish there was more space between them. The thing that's irking me now is people are saying we're remaking No Strings Attached. We're not remaking it. The two movies were being made at the same time. " [14] Gluck, in an interview with The New Zealand Herald, said that both films are different. [15] Similar sentiments were expressed by Kunis, stating, "It's just two different movies. There's only... so many stories you can tell in the world. This is just one of the many. " [16] The first theatrical trailer was released on March 16, 2011. [17] The trailer had a subsequent release on YouTube and attracted over a million views in 48 hours, becoming the second most watched video of the day and the most viewed video in the film category. [18] Promotion for Friends with Benefits subsequently grew, including promotional videos from Facebook and Twitter. Timberlake and Kunis also landed on the cover of Elle in support of the film. [19] [20] Writing [ edit] Will Gluck stated that the concept of the story began with the idea that he wanted to work with Kunis and Timberlake, explaining that he rewrote the script for the two actors. Following those changes, Gluck expressed that he wanted to attract a more adult audience and that he "wanted to do more of an adult movie about sex, too, and about relationships". [21] He went on to compare the storyline of Friends with Benefits to the relationship in films between Katharine Hepburn and Spencer Tracy. [22] As a viewer, I don't want to walk into a movie called Friends with Benefits and see the PG-13 version. For me, you can't have a movie like that without embracing what the title is. —Justin Timberlake [23] In an interview with Movieline, Gluck further discussed the film's plot saying that Friends with Benefits would relate largely with a younger generation. He added: "They comment about these romantic comedies throughout the movie, and as they go through their storyline, they realize that they're in a romantic comedy story — as two regular people who aren't in a movie would comment on. They're very cognizant that they're in this story... but they end up embracing the fact that they're going through a romantic comedy moment. " [24] In an interview with the Los Angeles Times, Timberlake explained that he and Gluck held authorship of humor and tone in regards to Friends with Benefits. On Rotten Tomatoes, the film has an approval rating of 68% based on 168 reviews with an average rating of 6. 17/10. The site's critical consensus reads, " Friends with Benefits adds nothing new to its well-worn rom-com formula, but the chemistry between Justin Timberlake and Mila Kunis is almost enough to carry the movie by itself. " [28] On Metacritic, the film has a score of 63 out of 100 based on 37 critics, indicating "generally favorable reviews". [29] Audiences polled by CinemaScore gave the film an average grade of "B+" on an A+ to F scale. [30] The look, thanks to director of photography Michael Grady, and the conversations on sex and commitment are open and open-ended. Important issues about the inherent clash between changing mores and traditional values get noodled over a bit. The sex talk is graphic, the sex itself is explicit and energetic, and Jamie and Dylan have a kind of sweetness that makes you want to root for them. His voice and his manner are light, there's barely a hair on the guy's chest, yet his confidence and wit are sexy in a way entirely befitting a smart urban romance. —Ty Burr, of the Boston Globe [40] Mary Pols of Time applauded the film, and wrote that despite the plot being predictable, the film was "elevated by energetic dialogue, the sexual chemistry between the leads and the fact that the miscommunication that keeps bliss at bay... is plausible. " He added that it mostly keeps its manic energy in check, and that it plays to chick-flick formulas without ever groveling – which is due almost entirely to the leads. " [43] Themes [ edit] According to The New York Times, Friends with Benefits, a film "about love and sex in the age of social networking, gets some of its juice and tang partly by trash-talking its own genre. The setup is familiar, as are the essential elements: a single man and a single woman, two battered hearts yet a pair of resilient, eager, pretty bodies... Friends with Benefits starts from the premise that its characters, and you, are sick of the romantic comedy clichés they may secretly, or not so secretly, adore. " [32] Drew Pinsky, an addiction medicine specialist felt that the film's central characters, both of whom were raised by a single parent in the film, "start looking for ways to solve that problem because they were never given the opportunity to grow an emotional landscape from a nurturing, available parent. They were just quickly parentalized and became a caretaker. And the caretaking is all part of the 'going for a broken person' and trying to fix them. " He further added that "love addiction ending in 'happily ever after' is not a great message. " [44] Timberlake added that Friends with Benefits is a film for "our generation; people that are between 25 and 30 years of age that are moving into a different part of their life. They are not sure what type of commitment they are comfortable with or what they're gonna do for the rest of their life". The invite to director Mark Bozek’s screening for The Times of Bill Cunningham, hosted by M•A•C, Nordstrom, and the Council of Fashion Designers of America, read simply: “Dress for Bill. ” Guests did not disappoint. Pat Cleveland spun for photographers in head-to-toe sequins, Susanne Bartsch arrived in a fully plumed look, and Jordan Roth brought out his pearls. It was a New York night fit for New York icons—Cunningham, of course, being the guest of honor. President and chief executive officer of the CFDA, Steven Kolb, couldn’t agree more. “I think it’s a perfect night to watch the film after we just finished New York Fashion Week. Bill was such a presence at the shows and someone that I always admired. I remember sitting behind him at a show in Europe once and he was so annoyed by all the celebrities on the runway, delaying the start of the show. He goes, ‘I just want to see the clothes! ’” The originator of street style photography, Cunningham first got his start at The New York Time s after innocently snapping a photo of Greta Garbo. It was the starlet's coat, not her storied cinematic legacy, that attracted him. The clothes always being the motivator, Cunningham’s assured eye was just as anticipated on the pages of the Times as his blue and khaki uniform, zipping around the city on his bicycle. He would continue to report for the Times for almost 40 years, up till his death in 2016. Sitting in the velvet seats at the Angelika Film Center & Café in Soho, guests were treated to an intimate interview filmed by Bozek in 1994. Narrated by Sarah Jessica Parker, the normally discreet Cunningham pulled back the curtain to reveal a story that had everyone in smiles and tears. “I certainly don’t want this to be a fashion movie. It’s so much more than that, ” revealed Bozek. And when asked what it was like speaking to Cunningham so candidly, Bozek didn’t hide his enthusiasm. “It was incredible! I didn't realize how incredible until 25 years later when I went into my basement and got the tapes and played it. How incredible it was that he never spoke to anyone before. ” (Incredible indeed as what was planned to be a quick 10 minute session with Cunningham turned into a 6-hour heart-to-heart. ) Dotted with quirky illustrations by artist Ruben Toledo and music beautifully composed by Ezinma, the film had a celebratory air. Bozek also spoke of the photographer’s timelessness: “He’s timeless because he never looked back. He never talked about past eras being better, he was always in the present. He was always looking to the future of discovery, of the next best thing. ” Roth, arm-in-arm with husband, Richie Jackson worked on decoding the magic behind the legend. “His ability to spot the authentic, to spot the unique, wherever and whoever it was. ” And thoughts on what he’d think of street fashion today? “Oh gosh! I think he would love some of it and I think he would let some of it pass on by, which is probably what he was doing all through his career. ” Soon after the screening ended a panel discussion commenced with Global Creative Director of M•A•C Cosmetics, Drew Elliott, Director Bozek, and longtime friend of Cunningham, Toledo. Free online true fiction games. I actually love horror books and rarely stray outside of this genre, especially not to read non fiction books. Well, imagine my surprise when a well meaning relative who knows about my reading tastes got me a nonfiction book that they thought was a fictional horror story. I haven't seen or heard a lot of people talk about this book, so I have no idea if it is actually popular or not, but it is called "Hell's Princess: The Mystery of Belle Gunness, Butcher of Men" by an author named Harold Schechter. Initially I also thought that it is fiction, I mean come on, a female psychopath serial killer who ran a murder farm? Well, turns out that not only was Belle a real person, but she also probably killed as many as 40 people who she lured to her farm under the pretense of seeking male companionship. Even more evil, when she suspected that she might be caught, Belle faked her own death and had her farm burned down with her own children still inside. Belle had a fondness for poisoning her victims before butchering them and this book made my blood run cold on a number of occasions! It is also the book that made me broaden my horizons from only reading horror novels to include some non fiction true crime stories as well and at this point I think the non fiction stuff scares me way more! To find the answer to this question you don't even have to read the books of the authors just go on social media and see which ones have embraced the online culture. I'm not saying that authors who secret themselves away from the public I can't be pop culture savvy, but the ones who interact with their fans online definitely have their finger on the pulse. One of my favorites is Neil Gaiman, an author who has established quite a community on Twitter. He is also one of the few authors who don't mind getting his fans involved with his work and asking for their input while writing. I feel like I should also mention Margaret E. Atwood, who despite the fact that she is pushing 80, has close to two million followers on Twitter alone. Her books, like The Handmaid's Tale, has always been ahead of their time and it almost feels like pop culture is catching up to her and not the other way around! I see everyone is posting fiction books here, but since you did not specify I would recommend a great book that I read many years ago called "Lost Gold & Buried Treasure: A Treasure Hunter's Guide to 250 Fortunes Waiting To Be Found. " It was written by Keven D. Randle, who was a Captain of the US Air Force Reserve. As far as I know, nobody has managed to find any of the fortunes in the book since it was written, but it still makes for a very interesting read. It actually amazes me how much lost treasure there are still left in the world, just waiting to be found. A more recent example would be the W. C. Jameson book, Lost Treasures & American History. The author is actually a professional treasure hunter and has first-hand experience with searching for all the buried treasures and lost mines that he describes in the book. From lost Spanish gold in the Sandia mountains to the Benedict Arnold Treasure and the treasure of Sir Francis Drake, there's plenty of good stories in here. My final choice would be The book of Buried Treasure: Being a True History of the Gold, Jewels, and Plate of Pirates, Galleons, Etc., Which Are Sought for to This Day by Ralph Delahaye Paine. This book is in the public domain I believe and while it is quite old, it contains more than enough great information about lost or buried treasure to keep you turning the pages. Just don't be surprised if you get the urge to invest in a metal detector and go out looking for your own buried treasure after reading all these books. A lot of people have mentioned it already, but it really is the classic books that only become better with age and upon re-reading. That is one of the reasons why I keep returning to this site as I can easily get all those half remembered and semi forgotten classics to read again on my phone. Sometimes some of the books are as bad or boring as I remember from my days being forced to read them at school, but most of the time a book turns out to be even better than what I remembered or so much better than what I thought. What I have also found is that while it shouldn't really matter, the look of a book can also shape my opinion. Many classic books are like these dusty, moldy looking things when you find them a secondhand bookshop, but if you see them digitally with a new cover they almost look more appealing. This is just a personal observation of course and your mileage may vary. This is a very tricky question to answer because it would depend on what your definition of a plot hole is. The traditional belief is that a plot hole is something in the story that either allows for illogical things to occur or where things happen that contradicts what has already happened before. The problem with a lot of books is that authors try to be too clever and end up writing themselves into a corner. The only way out of it is to then come up with something far-fetched and illogical to resolve their conundrum. This is very disappointing for readers as they read in suspense, expecting to find out how the impossible is going to happen, only to find out that the author didn't know either and just faked it. You can think of it as the literary equivalent of those television shows that end in a cliffhanger of the hero being in a building that explodes, only to walk out at the start of the next episode looking only a little dirty. It insults the intelligence of readers and has spoiled many a good book as well. If only some authors would put a little more thought into their overall stories this wouldn't happen so much, but the problem is that a lot of authors write books in a series these days instead of stand-alone novels, which makes it way harder to keep track of all the loose threads. A good example of the latter would be A Song of Ice and Fire. Now before anyone starts attacking me, I love the books to death, but anyone who has read them will know that they are full of glaring inconsistencies. I'm not going to go into any specifics for the sake of those who have not yet read the books or watched the show, but suffice to say that they are there for all to see. The Harry Potter series is another good example, although it is quite amusing to see some of the fan theories that have popped up over the years to try and justify them!

Everyone who believes in justice for all, irrelevant of your race, social status and wealth should watch this film and I applaud the makers for bringing the story of this courageous lawyer to the big screen to highlight how these prejudices still exist in the home of the free.
